Mr. Eduardo Tambiac who resides in Demang, Sagada Mountain
Province is a master weaver of what we call a “Kamowan” – a vase like storage container made out of
“uwey”, a bamboo like flexible stick
found at the forests of the highlands.
He was a farmer, growing cabbages and potatoes back
then. One day he was in a vehicular
accident that cost him his legs. Half of his body was paralyzed that he no
longer work nor move around. He then began learning the art of weaving
“Kamowan” as a source of living.
Eduardo only finds happiness in life through singing where
he could freely express his feelings. He spends almost all his life in his
“Gungo” – a Sagadanian term for a cottage like house used for storage – smoking
of “Etag”, smoked meat and preparing food for the pigs. He cannot move around
in and outside his house, not because he has no wheel chair but due to the
rough surfaces of the floor. Now at the age of 60, he relies on weaving to
sustain his basic needs. His “Kamowans” vary in shapes and sizes and accepts
orders according to customer specifications.
